UNDERSTANDING YOUR SKIN BARRIER
Most skin concerns get treated before anyone checks whether the skin barrier can handle the treatment.
The skin barrier is the outermost layer of skin, made up of skin cells held together by a structure of lipids, often described as bricks and mortar. Its job is to keep moisture in and irritants out. When it's working properly, most people don't think about it at all. When it isn't, almost everything applied to the skin starts to feel like a problem.
Signs the barrier is under strain
tightness that doesn't ease after moisturising
redness or a stinging sensation with products that never used to cause one
flaking or rough patches, even with regular exfoliation
skin that reacts to change more than it used to: new products, weather, even water
What tends to cause it
Barrier strain is usually cumulative rather than caused by one thing. Layering several active ingredients at once, exfoliating more often than the skin can recover from, extended use of drying products, and environmental factors like wind and changing seasons all play a part. It builds gradually, which is also why it's often missed until the skin is already reactive.
How we approach it at Kaia
Every consultation starts with a full-face assessment, and barrier health is part of that assessment before any treatment is recommended, not after. In practice, this can mean sequencing treatments further apart than a client expects, recommending a period of at-home skincare before an in-clinic treatment, or suggesting a gentler starting point than the one originally asked for. It's never one-size-fits-all, because two people with the same visible concern can have very different barriers underneath it.
A strong barrier isn't the finishing touch on a skincare routine. It's the condition everything else depends on.
Book a full-face assessment before your next treatment, particularly if your skin has felt reactive lately.
